A thesis statement answers the question your essay investigates. It's not a title, a topic, or a question. It's a declarative sentence that takes a clear position and tells readers exactly what to expect from your essay.
What makes a thesis strong?
A strong thesis is specific: it doesn't rehash common knowledge or offer a bland observation. It's arguable: not everyone would automatically agree with it. And it's provable: you can support it with evidence, examples, and analysis.
Weak vs. strong thesis examples
Weak: "Shakespeare wrote important plays."
Why: This is an observation, not an argument. Everyone knows Shakespeare is important.
Strong: "In Hamlet, Shakespeare uses the motif of corruption to show how inaction enables moral decay in both individuals and societies."
Why: This makes a specific claim about how a technique creates meaning, and invites debate about interpretation.
The thesis formula
Claim + because + reason(s)
Example: "Social media amplifies political polarization because the algorithm-driven feed creates echo chambers that reinforce existing beliefs rather than exposing users to diverse viewpoints."
The "because" part hints at the structure of your essay. Your main argument points are already embedded in your thesis.
Where does your thesis go?
In most essays, the thesis appears at the end of your introduction. This gives readers context before you reveal your claim.
Sometimes, but usually one strong sentence works best. If you need two, make sure they form one unified argument, not two separate ideas.
Not explicitly, but the logic of your thesis should suggest your evidence. If your thesis mentions X and Y caused Z, readers expect your body paragraphs to explain how.
That's normal. Many writers discover their real argument through drafting. When you see the revised thesis emerge, go back and rewrite your introduction to match.
